I made a walnut raisin rum cake for Dale's 55th birthday and it was delicious. I'm sure there will be more to follow! This book was a Christmas gift from Dale.

Maida Heatter is the grand dame of baking, and her cookbook reminds of trying to read your grandmother's recipes. The instructions are all there, I just think there is more to baking than mixing ingredients. I like books that are more visual, and there are no illustrations or photos in this book. It's not for the social media age group, for sure. I did find it interesting that she had a cake recipe from the Neiman Marcus store. She does include recipes from different restaurants for cakes people Maida Heatter is the grand dame of baking, and her cookbook reminds of trying to read your grandmother's recipes. It's not for the social media age group, for sure. I did find it interesting that she had a cake recipe from the Neiman Marcus store. She does include recipes from different restaurants for cakes people have raved about, including one from a New York recipe that Robert Redford liked. She admits she was just attracted to the recipe because of his photo. I guess you call that a thirst trap for a baker.

Dionne's chocolate roll is to die for, I got to page 75 before the cake calling hit. Just say cake and I am in the kitchen. I told one of my daughters I wanted all of Maida Heatter's books for Xmas, I had only one and all my favorite recipes come from it. All were old but in excellent shape, two look like they were never used but rest assured they will be now.

Maida Heatter is the queen of desserts! If you love to bake cakes, this book is a recipe for success. Heatter's instructions are exceptionally well detailed. Even the most daunting recipe is "doable" with her impeccable guidance. The personal histories she adds to many of the recipes are fun to read and really give a sense of the joy she brings to and takes from her craft.

This one was pretty good (though I was already a Maida Heatter fan when I picked up this book). There were some really interesting recipes that I've never seen before, and I liked the bits of history she placed in the preceding anecdotes. I thought the inclusion of some recipes was bizarre (I don't know anyone who would classify a cinnamon roll or a scone as a cake), but those recipes sounded just as delicious as the others.

Maida Heatter is the master of dessert! Loved the book, could have used some photos, but otherwise great. Every kind of cake you can imagine.

The chapter on cheesecakes alone was worth the price.
