The tenth single issue of the best comic series on the planet begins with a guy putting a band-aid on his nose and this: “Dan Faraday had been drinking too much ever since he had come to Bay City. And when he drank too much, he made stupid decisions.. . . even though he knew better.” I love that flat funny irony, in that of course drunks make bad decisions and they know that, too, and so we can expect bad things. It’s fate! It’s, after all, the world of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’s Criminal The tenth single issue of the best comic series on the planet begins with a guy putting a band-aid on his nose and this: “Dan Faraday had been drinking too much ever since he had come to Bay City. It’s fate! It’s, after all, the world of Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips’s Criminal (2019), and what can go wrong will go wrong. “A small root of despair grew in him.” Faraday is on the trail of Jane, who he wants to “save” from Teeg Lawless, after being left in a parking lot. This is the last issue before the Big Heist, so not much happens in this single issue, but I still give it 5 stars, because it’s such good granular storytelling, and trust me, this is a 5-star series. Oh, and we get a side story about Tracy and Ricky Lawless, and we do get to meet up with Jane and Teeg, who kicks Ricky out of his house (involving a fistfight) as he prepares with Jane for the heist. So, yep, Faraday, a mentally unstable ex-cop drunk, at a strip club, drunk, seeking info on the whereabouts of Jane at a strip club, is closing in. Sean Phillips—broken record—is amazing in the illustration, perfect crime comics. The color by Jacob Phillips is garish, magentas, limes, reds, bright oranges, to create an unsettling clash with the fact that it mostly happens at night, so the scenes of the seedy streets and dive bars and strip clubs are dark and ill lit. The drawing and lighting seduce you into this grimy, gritty train wreck of a world, and so, thus seduced, I can’t wait til next month when I get the next issue.

Probably the least excellent installment so far of this fantastic 2019 run of Criminal. Eventhough its the least excellent, it's still excellent & further proof that this latest run is the best Criminal yet, not to mention maybe the best thing Brubaker and Phillips have ever done, which is saying something, considering all the great stuff they've done.

Such a consistently great series; this chapter in the "Cruel Summer" story arc pulls multiple threads together to set up the big heist that's been the object of the story.
