On the lower side of mediocre, Shazam is everything Geoff Johns loves: a variety of superheroes who are all different (except they're actually carbon copies) and weird concepts (that are actually old and tired) and epics that stretch on and on. If you're fine with that kind of story, that's cool, but, for these first 6 issues, it feels largely disjointed, paced poorly, and not that well thought-out.

This was definitely a fun read. I like how Geoff Johns did his best to keep the “fun” aspect of SHAZAM!, living up to the original concept. I tend to like a bit more drama, but I see where the book is going and I like it. I read this run in single issues and expected a resolution by the end, but it was left quite open ended (just when things were getting more interesting!). I guess I will have to keep on reading as the single issues come out instead of waiting for the arc to be finally over.

This volume was great! Not only did I love the New 52 Shazam as a great companion to the film, sharing many elements, this comic acts almost as a continuation of the story if not in spirit. I am hopeful that in the sequel, after Black Adam premiers, that they use this as an influence. I thought that I might just read this volume, but I am sure now that I will see the story through in the next one they put out. It's just too much fun to miss!

I love Geoff Johns. I love his approach to writing and building character and showing their humanity. He gets you to really care about the characters and see them as real. Even if I don’t already like a particular superhero I know I’ll end up loving them because of Geoff Johns skill as a writer.
