A really fun story (or stories, this is technically three trades in one hardcover if I am remembering correctly). I’m not sure how much of it is canon compared to the movies and tv show (which are both amazing), but that doesn’t really affect my enjoyment of the book. I just would like to know for the sake of knowing lol. Raunip was an interesting edition to the mythos. Not sure how I feel about Aughra having a “son” but he was an interesting foil to her. Also seeing “young” versions of the A really fun story (or stories, this is technically three trades in one hardcover if I am remembering correctly). Years before Netflix released the ten-hour prequel masterpiece Age of Resistance, a number of creators have told their own tales set in the fantasy world of Thra through other media. With the return of the original film’s concept artist Brian Froud, Creation Myths is a trilogy of graphic novels that reveal the definitive origins of the Skeksis, Mystics, Gelfling, and the Dark Crystal itself while introducing all new characters in an epic spanning thousands of years. A strong addition to the Dark Crystal mythos, with excellent art from Brian Froud, who was also the artistic director of the original movie. He’s clearly a talented fellow, as he proves to be as adept at storytelling via sequential art as he is at creature design. The art has an entirely unique and other-worldly quality that truly elevates the entire project, and makes this volume worth buying based solely on those merits alone. Fortunately the art is married with solid writing. Fortunately the art is married with solid writing. This volume combines what was originally three volumes, with the strongest stories being the first and second parts. Epic in scope (literally thousands of years), the story effectively fleshes out the movie universe and answers some questions I wasn’t even aware I had until reading. Some interesting new characters are introduced, and have satisfying mini-arcs within the larger story. Obviously, this is a book aimed squarely at fans of the movie and new Netflix series, and I believe will satisfy fans of either. Highly recommended. On a more mundane note, I would also add that the hardcover Complete Collection is of high quality construction, and looks nice on the shelf next to the hardcover copies of Power of the Dark Crystal and Beneath the Dark Crystal, two other comic tie-ins worthy of your attention.
