Throughout history, food has served as a means of bringing community together. A time to fellowship and sharing news, forging a future in common purpose. This cookbook provides a means to this end. Ms. Brunstetter has compiled a treasure trove of recipes from submissions from her readers. This is a great go-to for those preparing to host a party at their home, a contribution to a pot luck dinner or any where a group gathers to share and break bread together. There is a wide variety of Throughout history, food has served as a means of bringing community together. There is a wide variety of topics covered including: beverages, snacks, breads, salads, side dishes, main dishes, desserts and weddings. The recipes range from simple to complex (this from reading them, there isn't a rating of any sort). As to be expected in any cookbook, recipes are offered based on taste and not on allergies or dietary restrictions. Likewise, since these are from the community and not a well-known chef's kitchen, there are a lot of "back of the box" recipes, that processed food manufacturers probably developed and promotes their name brand product as a chief ingredient. An example here would be soda manufacture's creation of fruity beverages, which has their fruit soda as a key component along with seasonal fruit. Or Velvetta cheese in some of the main dishes and snacks, apparently Velvetta is a staple in the Amish diet. These are not the only offerings, there are some homemade creations, too. If you like desserts, this is the book for you! There are plenty of options that will definitely delight you. Unlike some recent cookbooks I have reviewed, this cookbook has a broad selection of options and has a few hundred recipes. I should also state that while there are definitely lots of recipes for serving many, there are also more meals focused on serving a family of six. Plenty of recipes focus on side dishes too. I would say that about a third of the book is dedicated to recipes for desserts of every type. There are quite a few even dedicated to weddings which would be worth the price of the book alone! I'd like to add that as a person who has collected church, Ladies Auxiliary, and school recipe books, this is a keeper. The design of this cookbook is gorgeous. The pictures are enough to make even a picky eater salivate. Interspersed among the sections are tips to accentuate the taste of various foods, suggestions such as make it the day before event, or heat it up before advice, great for those who don't cook much. It is spiral bound which some people prefer. This is a great gift option for those who need some basic cooking expertise and want plenty of smiles and compliments for their efforts! If you have a fan of all things Amish in your life, this would probably be a great addition to their life. The holidays are coming sooner than you think. Many thanks to Shiloh Run Press, Ms. Wanda Brunstetter and Goodreads for providing this Cookbook in exchange for my honest review. Now Available For Purchase.

What a wonderful cookbook to add to my collection, and I love the recipes and I love the personal tidbits included at the beginning of each section. This cookbook includes an index of recipes by Key Ingredients, but also by Section. Then credit is given to each of the contributors by adding their name and location, so yes, it is a cookbook by friends. There is even a bunch of recipes for feeding a crowd, I can just picture these at a family reunion, or possibly at a church gathering. Now I want the whole book. The recipes are well written (I was a little confused about a copious amount of "pineapple gelatin" in once recipe which I found out it was powdered Jello-o ... we don't have the pineapple flavour in Canada!) I do wish that I had a chance to read the whole thing: I guess that I will have buy the book to cook my way through it. This was a lovely magnification of the Amish community and how they gather together, along with the food that they share. I love a good drink, the Frozen Pear Slush jumped out at me because I love pears and it didn't disappoint. It was tasty and a recipe I'm sure to use again. I enjoy doing party style foods so I'm always looking for easy yet tasteful recipes to add to my collection. I've done a similar Tortilla Roll like the one listed but had to give this one a try because the ingredients were different from what I've used before. I can say I look forward to using it at a baby shower I will be hosting at the beginning of next month. Blackberries are my favorite fruit so when I saw the Blackberry Gelatin Salad I new I had to give it a go, being from the South I can say we love our "salads" so I'm happy to have a new one to try out on my family. There are so many recipes I look forward to taking on, the different cheesecakes, the Mini Key Lime Tarts, and the Brown Sugar Dumplings; to name a few. I adored reading the stories before each section and love the way the author put this wonderful cookbook together!!!

I think something people assume about Amish cooking is that everything is made from scratch, but many meals are often compromised of convenience foods. This book features a mix of both types of recipes, some with a lot of detail and others are quite simple. There are some good recipes here and everything is nicely arranged. I wish there was text to go with the photos of the food because it is sometimes hard to tell what dish it is.

Beautifully illustrated with all full-color photos and pages, this cookbook is spiral-bound for easy use and contains over 200 recipes. Each section begins with a short informational page or story from either Wanda herself or Amish friends, followed by a few general tips applicable to that section. Food forms an important part of Amish events and socializing, highlighting the connection between food and fellowship. As such, this cookbook provides fodder for the heart as well as for the stomach. Thoughtfully organized into eight sections according to food type and including one for beverages as well, this handy cookbook is easy to navigate and offers a glimpse of Amish life. Three indices make it quick and easy to look up recipes by contributor, section, or key ingredients. Each recipe names the contributor and their city and state, with most hailing from the Midwest. The recipes are written for fairly large quantities, given that Amish families tend to be sizable, and the last section is comprised of recipes specifically tailored to cater to big groups. Seeing three designated gluten-free recipes pleasantly surprised me; these include gluten-free skillet corn bread, gluten-free breakfast casserole, and gluten-free angel food cake. Other recipes can be adapted to suit special diets, but overall this cookbook does not address specific dietary restrictions. Furthermore, the recipes are very succinct, such that a basic knowledge of cooking is necessary because there are not hints or extra details in the instructions. While I would not necessarily recommend this to a kitchen novice, for those with any kind of experience cooking or baking, this collection imparts unique recipes with some Amish wisdom on the side.   I received a complimentary copy of this book from Barbour Publishing and was under no obligation to post a review.

In fact, I have quite a collection of them that I use frequently. Some of my favorites are those that are not merely by one person, but those that feature a compilation of recipes from various sources. For me these are the best for two reasons. The first being that they tend to have a wider variety of styles, flavors, etc. Being by different individuals, they seem to just offer a lot more options to choose from. The second reason is that I find these type of cookbooks feature recipes that have been tried and trusted by REAL people--- not chefs, but at home cooks and bakers like myself. That's not to say they're always simple... I just personally feel like I know that these recipes are those that have some family history to them. I absolutely love that. This cookbook offers not only a wide variety of recipes that are perfect for church cookouts, family gatherings and more... but also lots of helpful tips and tricks for the occasion too. All of this is great, but more than anything I enjoyed the stories within as well. Food is such a staple in family celebrations, and one that is embedded in our memories so I love reading more about those memories within. It is more than JUST a cookbook. I was drawn to this book having read Amish fiction by Wanda E. Brunstetter in the past. The stories and the recipes within are going to be a great addition for anyone who is already a fan of her novels, or truly just anyone who loves a good ol' fashioned cookbook. It is certainly a welcome addition to my own collection, and one I know I will be turning to time and time again.

The photography is appealing and warm and emphasizes the comfort and simplicity of good food with good friends and family. The typography and layout are homey, with recipes presented individually, organized by section. Many of these recipes will be familiar to cooks who have had family recipes handed down for generations. The recipes all have ingredients listed in American standard measurements only. The written directions are clear and easy to follow. There is no nutritional information given for the sample recipes, and the contributors names are listed for each. I was surprised (and pleased) to see that some of the recipes included convenience ingredients. Also many of these recipes have large yields, perfect for parties, reunions, gatherings, etc. There is a strong theme of Christian fellowship and worship and the important role that food plays in the social and religious structure of believers. Five stars. (With the assumption that the rest of the recipes and book quality are to the same standard as the sample provided). Disclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

There is a recipe called Messy Pink Stuff which I definitely want to try. There are recipes called Pumpkin Snickerdoodles and Can't-Leave-Alone-Bars. There are also recipes for salads, breads, snacks, side dishes, main dishes, and desserts. There is a section on drinks which I like because I feel like I'm always struggling to come up with a punch recipe or other flavorful drink for showers and get-togethers. I am also intrigued by the section called "Recipes for Feeding a Crowd". These recipes call for ingredients such as "11 large heads of cauliflower" and "36 pounds ground beef". If I ever have to feed a crowd, this will be a great section to refer to! In addition to the great recipes, there are a page or two of stories in each section written by the author or friends of the author. There are various tips in each section, too, which I found very interesting and useful. Some of these tips include how to keep flies away, preparing food ahead of time, and transporting food. A majority of these recipes do appear to yield large amounts of food, even the recipes not in the feeding a crowd section. I halved the cookie recipe I mentioned above and it made 104 cookies. These recipes are probably not the healthiest choices by today's standards, but that being said, I highly recommend this cookbook! I’ll make that one as well, and it will undoubtably bring back memories of her kindness. One of the greatest aspects of this book—other than the recipes, of course—is that it is spiral-bound. It’s so nice to have the book lie flat when preparing a meal, or to have the ability to fold the book open. I really can’t think of a single con to this cookbook. This book will pull you in with sweet memories of gatherings of Amish families. The contributors share a number of recipes used through the years in their family and community. You can almost smell the aromas of the foods cooking, see the colorful tables set for friends, and long to taste just a sampling from the spread that laid before them. Tradition. Simple foods. Fellowship. Rejoicing. Along with the work of the women, the service of the men and the thankfulness the community shared are evident in the pages of this book. Take me back to the simpler times. The times when sharing foods .was as important as saying "you are special to me." When reading this book, be sure to notice the names of those sharing recipes - A true Amish heritage is evident. 4.5 stars Yum! That's the first work this comes to mind about this upcoming release from Brunstetter! I've read many of her fiction books, but I've never checked out an Amish cookbook prior to this one. I'll likely remedy that in the future! I love that this is spiral-bound, which makes it so much easier to use while cooking. The collection includes over 200 recipes, perfect for your family, and there's even a section for a crowd (including those up to 300 people!). It's we 4.5 stars Yum! It's well organized into the following sections: beverages, snacks, breads and rolls, salads, side dishes, main dishes, desserts, and feeding a crowd. Stories are shared between each section. Practical preparation tips are spread throughout the cookbook, as well. This is a wonderful addition to my cookbook collection! I have SO many recipes flagged in this book! A few of the recipes at the top of my to-try list are: - Poppyseed Dressing - Baked Macaroni and Cheese - Pizza Bake - Chicken Vegetable Casserole - Pumpkin Snickerdoodles - Crunchy Peanut Butter Treats Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

I have to say, I love this cookbook. I generally love cookbooks. But I find that a lot of them include a lot of recipes I know I'll never cook, because they call for ingredients that I don't happen to have in my house, or weird, rare spices. Not so with this cookbook! The Amish know how to cook for families, and they know how to cook simple, hearty food that will satisfy those at the table. This cookbook delivers on both of these items. I've already made several items -- my kids really loved the pizza pockets. Because the recipes make so much, there are always leftovers! Take the pizza pockets -- we made them on a Sunday, and the kids took them in their lunches all week! I also love the little anecdotes that are sprinkled throughout the book that give insights into daily Amish life. If you are looking for a solid cookbook that has wonderful recipes that use ordinary, every day ingredients, choose this one, Wanda E. Brunstetter's Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook - you won't be disappointed! I was given a copy of this book by the publisher in exchange for my honest review. It is my pleasure to provide that here.

. . I absolutely enjoyed flipping through this book! I liked the tips shared from Amish and Mennonite women about food preparation, clean-up techniques, planning advice and how to feed a large crowd. The recipes are well-written and easy to follow. If there was any improvement for future editions or future cookbooks, I would hope for a sturdier spiral for the spine. This spine, however, does help the book lay flat for ease-of-use. I definitely recommend this book to those curious about Amish and Mennonite cooking! Wanda E. Brunstetter’s Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook is available now! I love reading Amish books and always seem to enjoy hearing about the meals that they prepare. They are usually wholesome and sometimes made with ingredients that they grow. I started with the Orange Drink found on page12 but had to change the measurements accordingly as I did not need 100 servings. The Butterhorn Rolls featured on page 34 where a taste my family enjoyed and I had some left over to freeze. The Melon Ambrosia found on page 47 was a huge hit with friends recently as it was cold and refreshing. Many of my friends had seconds. I tried the Best Beef Roast on page 86 and found it to be delicious and very tasty. Unfortunately, I have many more pages to choose recipes from but this is a cookbook you might want to try and experiment with.

Wanda Brunstetter's Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook - Oh my goodness, I love this book. It is nicely made with bright, colorful pictures, detailed recipes. There are pages of Amish insight scattered throughout, an Index of recipe contributors, and an Index of recipes by section in the back along with an index in the front. A bonus in the back is an Index of Recipes by Key Ingredients. I made the Oatmeal Sandwich Cookies & the Orange-Pineapple Salad, both were wonderful. I was given a chance to receive Wanda Brunstetter’s “Amish Friends Gatherings Cookbook” for my review. I was very pleased with this book and found many exciting and delectable recipes to try. The home-style recipes are exactly what I look for when purchasing a cookbook. I have written my own cookbook, which I self-published a few years ago. I sold about 300 copies. I know what goes into compiling each section of recipes and found that Wanda did a wonderful job.
